Nine-Month-Old Gets a Second Chance at Life after Complex Brain Surgery at SPARSH Hospital, Hennur Road

Bengaluru, (Karnataka) [India], July 04, 2026: A nine-month-old baby suffering from severe hydrocephalus – a condition caused by an abnormal build-up of fluid in the brain, leading to an enlarged head, has received a renewed chance at life after undergoing complex high-risk brain surgery at SPARSH Hospital, Hennur Road.

Born with an abnormally enlarged head, the child’s condition worsened over time. Her head circumference grew to just under 100 cm, making it extremely difficult for her to sit, turn, move freely or take part in age-appropriate physical activities. Despite these challenges, she remained alert, responsive and interactive, responding to voices, touch and care.

As the size and weight of her head increased, her movement became so severely restricted that she developed pressure sores on the skin of her scalp due to her inability to maintain adequate head movements. It became clear that she required urgent and specialised brain surgery.

Following a series of circumstances, the child came under the care of an orphanage, which subsequently sought specialized medical intervention. The surgery required was highly complex, carried significant clinical risks and involved substantial medical expenses.

After detailed evaluation and careful planning, a multidisciplinary team at SPARSH Hospital, Hennur Road, took up the case. Given the child’s young age, the severity of hydrocephalus and the risks involved, the procedure required close coordination, precision and continuous monitoring.

The objective was not only to treat the medical condition, but to give the child a genuine opportunity for alleviate pain, comfort, improved movement and a stronger chance of achieving developmental milestones. Understanding the financial constraints involved, every effort was made to ensure that cost did not become a barrier to her treatment.

Speaking about the case, Dr. Ann Agnes Mathew, Senior Consultant – Paediatric Neurology, SPARSH Hospital, Hennur Road, said, “The baby’s condition had progressed to a stage where surgery was the only viable treatment option, despite the inherent risks. The high-risk nature of the procedure required careful planning and precision. Our goal was not only to treat the medical condition but to give her the opportunity for a healthier future and better quality of life.”

The surgery was successfully completed, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the baby’s life. Doctors said continued follow-up, rehabilitation and supportive care will be important in helping her recover and progress further.

Speaking on SPARSH Hospital Hennur’s readiness to manage complex cases, Col. Rahul Tewari, Cluster COO, SPARSH Hospital, Hennur Road, said, “Cases like this reflect the clinical depth, preparedness, and multidisciplinary strength that define SPARSH Hospitals. Our focus is to provide advanced and compassionate care for patients with complex medical needs across all age groups.”

For the baby, the intervention has opened the door to renewed hope – a chance to grow, move, explore the world around her and experience childhood with greater comfort.
